Steve
has been retained during his 35-year career by more than 100 major
companies to improve business strategies and achieve better
results. He has served as consultant to executive officers managing
a wide variety of corporate disciplines in developing
and implementing strategic initiatives designed to
improve every aspect of department and corporate performance.
He served as consultant and
facilitator for the
Chief Legal Officer of the 21st Century Advisory Group and the
Chief
Litigation Officer Advisory Group, both of which met quarterly
over a three-year period to discuss
and develop more effective strategies for law department and litigation
management.
From 1992 to 1997, he
served first as consultant and then as Corporate Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the
Prudential Financial corporate law department, which then ranked as the 7th largest
in the U.S. with more than 300 lawyers. He was the senior leader
responsible for the department's transformation strategy as well as
departmental operations, including law firm convergence and partnering, finance, human resources and compensation,
technology, metrics and strategic planning.
From 1971 until 1992, he was
Chairman and CEO of HRN, a strategy consulting firm whose clients included leading global
companies in all major industries. He successfully completed complex
reengineering and strategy development assignments for major companies.
Clients included: Citibank, Exxon USA, Monsanto, Honeywell, TRW, AT&T,
Sara Lee Corporation, Hershey Foods, Philip Morris, Nestlé USA, General Motors,
Prudential, Bank of America, US West, Ameritech, Raytheon, Equitable, Ford
Motor Company, MetLife and Bell Atlantic, among many others.
He has written several
management books including Leveraging the Impact of Public Affairs,
a 400-page handbook on maximizing the benefits to be achieved from
government affairs, corporate communications, issues management and
other stakeholder disciplines.
His articles on law department strategic management topics
have been published in Chief Legal Executive, Corporate
Counsel, Diversity & the Bar, Corporate Legal Times, Metropolitan Corporate
Counsel, National Law Journal, Texas Lawyer and PR Quarterly magazines.
Steve served a member of the
Benefits Committee of the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund. From 1998 to 2000, he served as
chairman of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of the
Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) and was significantly
involved in MCCA's programs. He also served as Chairman of the National
Corporate Advisory Committee for Hands Across America.
